What up my people ? I’m very glad to open this new blog post category on my website. Interviewing an artist is always a great thing, it can teach you so much, and at the same time it’s a way to make a track live longer on the Internet. The first homie to sit down with me is the brother Revalation of EMS, with who I just dropped a hot collaboration named « This That Work ». Let’s ask him some cool questions about all that. Go !
1) Let our people know how did you get in touch with my work and what was your first thoughts?
Well, I had seen your name around on a couple of the blogs I frequent for awhile and then I seen that you did some work with my homies Don Streat, S.O.N., Lord Baltimore DDS so I reached out because I loved what I heard and then I was featured on the joint « Broken Silence » on the « Bare My Soul » album you did with Don Streat.
2) It is definitely not your first international collaboration, do you see this international thing as a future of something for the HipHop culture?
Definitely, I love working with international artists as well as producers. There is a respect for the origins of the Hip-Hop culture there, that sometimes is lacking here in the States today. I’ve worked with people like my homies Joe Lazarus & Kenshin (Belgium), Soul Infected (Finland), SoulSlicers (Switzerland), DJ Brans (France), Empne (Greece), Gajos (Poland) and I hope to keep building with many more and making that real shit!
3) Then you hosted one of my radio show episodes. How was it and was it your first opportunity on french airplays?
Yes I did, definitely was a dope opportunity for me to reach some new listeners. Before that, I had actually worked with DJ Jean Maron (who is from Nancy, France) on the Run MPC CD (on itunes) and that was my first experience getting some airplay and love in France but since then EMS has made a lot of connects with French artists and it’s been dope to work with them.
4) I’m always looking for ways to improve my radio game up, what would be your advice to make it better?
I think you’re on the right track brother. I love the guest hosts and the music you play, all the Real Hip-Hop shit and I think if you stay on that track you’ll be perfectly fine brother.
5) Is there a difference with the radio shows in your area ?
Yes, for sure! I mean the mainstream stations play just that, mainstream. We have a few college radio stations and internet stations that support indie artists but it’s a constant grind to get heard because everyone wants to play what’s « hot » just to get listeners rather than playing what’s actually dope and good music.
6) And now we make music together, that’s incredible! What were you thinking when I ask you to jump on a beat?
I was excited to connect and I enjoy your production so I knew it would be a homerun.
7) How and why did you chose that beat for This That Work? Did you have the track in mind already ?
Well, initially I think you had sent me a different beat and I mentioned to you I wanted something more gritty and suitable to my style so our first collab would hit people in the face and then you sent that beat and it just spoke to me. I didn’t have the concept in mind yet but once I heard the beat I wrote the track legit in like half hour.
8) I personally think that you did a great lyrical work on this track. What is your writing process for such collabs?
Thank you I appreciate that bro, people are really loving the vibe of the track and say its one of my best records. Usually when I write for collabs, I like to listen to the beat all the way through a few times and if the beat catches me I start freestyling rhymes and usually that’s how I come up with the chorus first. Once I have the chorus I know where the rest the track will go from there and I just build around it.
9) You decided to put this joint on your upcoming album. Let us know more things about it.
The EP is called Emergency Broadcast which goes along with the TV Related theme that I been going with. My first mixtape was « Commercial Interruption » which featured a lot of me remixing commercial joints and putting my own spin on it, my 2nd mixtape was « Feature Presentation » which was all original beats but very feature heavy, which was the point due to the title lol. And this EP will be all original production and more solo joints. There will be a few features but it will be showcasing more of my own song writing skills and it will drop on itunes, amazon, google play, etc. sometime in 2015. I don’t have an exact date yet but I will definitely let everyone know once it’s set in stone.
10) Any last words?
Yes, thank you for the interview FD and also for providing the mean beat for « This That Work » and it was a pleasure to work with someone who is on the same page Hip-Hop wise! You did a hell of a job mixing the record too! I look forward to doing more work in the future homie! Shout out 2 all my girl Kendra who pushes me constantly to record and even helps man the board lol and also shout out my overseas fam and my crew EMS
