Hip Hop personality, excellent radio host and friend from Canada Steph Nash accepted to open this new blog post serie : How to be an emcee by ? The concept is simple but exciting : I ask 10 cool questions to a hiphop activist, in order to find a good definition of a good emcee in 2015 ! I want to thank personaly Steph for her time, her passion and her profesionalism !
Do not sleep on her great work with all the links at the end of the post !
1) What do you expect the most from an emcee ?
I expect real lyrical content. The kind that narrates a story or events. The ability of taking raw complex lyrics, correlating them with real life experiences. Clever and rhythmic play on words and strong vocal presence. And if the emcee can accomplish all of this and understand how to ride the beat, I will forever be fan.
2) What do you like the most from emcees nowadays ?
I like the emcees who continue to deliver substance in their lyrics. The emcees who illustrate the hunger and drive in standing out. Nowadays that is missing in mainstream, this is one of the reasons I support independent and underground emcees …they have a distinctive drive in creating solid wordplay and rhyming formulas.
3) Chose one : flow or meaning ?
That’s easy. Meaning of course. For me it has and always will be about the lyrics. That’s what brings it home for me.
4) New track every week or two album a year ?
That’s a tough one. I love hearing new tracks. If they encompass everything I expect, I’d take a new track every week. Realistically, I think that might be difficult for an emcee to achieve this and have an overall solid body of work.
5) The best thing an emcee can do for his / her fans ?
An emcee who consistently strives at polishing his/her craft. Being original.
6) Your best advices for emcees in 2015 ?
Stand out from the norm and deliver lyrics with substance. Give listeners something beyond the recycled imitation of making money, popping bottles, hitting the clubs and verses about chicks booties. That is whack! Strive to be original.
7) The topic that emcees should talk about ?
Life experiences and current events even ones that pose some controversy, but need to said.
8) The website or social media you use the most to discover new talents ?
I would have to say twitter and 2 Dope Boys. I don’t have facebook. I don’t connect with a lot of sites. Twitter is where you find a lot of really good hip hop. It is where I find out a lot new talent too. If you follow all the artists you enjoy and respect, they post every upcoming projects, links to soundclouds, iTunes, Datpiff and you see who they enjoy or recommend too.
9) Name a producer you know emcees should work with
Besides Cool FD?! Wow! There are so many. I really like Pete Rock, Premier, Ayatollah, Doctor G, Sir Williams of Union Blak, Apollo Brown, Big Sproxx. Rich Kidd and list goes on and on.
10) The emcee you would suggest us to follow ?
I got a few newer ones you most definitely should follow. Napoleon Da Legend hands down. I am really loving his lyrical wordplay, content, voice and flow. I also have really enjoy Divine (the 4thletter). I stumbled on a few of Divine’s snippets from his promo pre-release for Ghetto Rhymin several months before it officially dropped in Nov 2014. I believe as a result of his life experiences and intellectual mind, this has allowed him to deliver well-rounded lyrics and he most definitely knows how to select and ride the beats.
